Her artistic journey began at the age of twelve. Debuting at such a young age, in a place foreign to her. At the age of twelve she already experienced the hardships and struggles as a singer. In contrast to any artist, her form of transportation as an artist was an underground train. To feature in one show, she had to go through a long audition process. These adversities, however, planted diligence and humbleness into her character. She’s become someone who is most thankful for her humble beginnings, and especially the preciousness of her members in her life.“I will always keep it in my heart, and never forget our beginning.” (2007).

To the members of Girls’ Generation, Sooyoung is like a protector. Not a physical protector per se, but one that emotionally shelters her members in every situation. Like Yuri said, Sooyoung is always the first person the members think of when they are in trouble or doubt. She’s also a consoler, and a pillar of support. When Taeyeon wanted to step down as leader, Sooyoung was the one who reached out to her. There is a sense of comfort in Sooyoung’s presence, which is why her members always find a sense of familiarity with her. Being a protector goes beyond the stereotypical duty of guarding a person, however, it’s about sheltering another’s well being and embracing wholeness in a group.Have a happy birthday Sooyoung.
